A feature of the external appearance was the use of a small concrete roof tile, colour Breekland Brown, which was accepted by Development Control in preference to the traditional slate finish or slate coloured tile.

Hill Street Housing Development, ElginWittets Ltd won a design competition to be commissioned to develop a brownfield site near to the town centre. The design used a traditional vernacular sympathetic to the historical part of Elgin with dwellings stepped up the sloping Hill Street, with two courtyards behind with southerly aspects, and buildings grouped to screen the unattractive northward outlook. Traditional detailing included crow-stepped gables, and a corner turret on the frontage to the High Street.
